    Hi,

How did you try to upgrade and what went wrong?

    Hi,

It is now a year at least since I tried to upgrade to El Capitan. I can't do it. 3 Apple technicians couldn't do it on the phone with me either so there's NO chance I'm going to do this on my own.

    I'm running  OS X 10.9.5 (13F1911) on a 27" iMac.

I do not know what to do, I've been talked through clean installs and everything that the Apple guys tried and they said they would get back to me but they never did. It sounds as if they just want to wash their hands of it.

    Can anyone help?

..Forgot to say..On the El Capitan page the last time I tried to install, it is now on 'pause' and it says .'waiting'  it hasn't moved from that for hours and I can not get it off that...even when I close down and reboot.

    Hi,

Have you tried OS X Recovery. About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

First, when you open the Recovery window, choose Disk Utility and run First Aid on your startup disk -- usually called Macintosh HD. If it is OK try Reinstall OS X.

If everything fails, you may try creating a bootable copy of the El Capitan installer on an external flash drive. For this you need a copy of the El cap installer in your Applications folder. You can find out how to download it here. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-el-capitan/id1018109117?mt=12

Once you have it in your Applications folder, learn how to create a bootable external drive installer here. Create a bootable installer for OS X - Apple Support

You will need a flash drive with at least 8 gb capacity.

You will have to be careful using the Terminal and make sure you get the paths right.

Once you have the bootable installer, boot up from that and install El Cap on your internal disk.
