Q: AirDrop crashes apps

Hi. I've got the MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) with the 256GB hard drive upgrade, running OS X 10.11.6 (15G1004).

Whenever I try to share anything using AirDrop, whether from default apps like Finder or app store apps from the App Store like Sketch, it just freezes the app. It makes all the options in the top menu become greyed out, and basically nothing works but quitting it. I'm not exactly sure what has caused this - it's started being like this a few weeks ago. I don't think restarts help either.

Another thing, which could possibly be related to this, is that all the widgets from the notification centre have disappeared. I have Today and Tomorrow already in there, but nothing else is available to add. Not default widgets, and not external widgets. This has happened about 6 months ago now, whereas the issue above has arisen in the last 2-3 weeks.

Any ideas?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

I suspect that you may have installed software (antivirus maybe?) that is interfering with normal operations such as airdrop. Often bad behavior is caused by incompatible, old or plain rogue applications and the user is unaware of that.

Please run Etrecheck and post its report here. It is a utility by a respected member of this community that will let us know what software is running and possibly help find the cause.

Edit: Oh, and also, I don't have anything invasive like an anti-virus running.

It is good that you don't have a anti-virus running - these cause all sorts of trouble and are useless.

You do have a great lot of stuff installed. Some of it is way outdated (MacFUSE from 2008...)

Your mac is starved for RAM,  (even though it has 8GB).

You seem to have a LOT of stuff installed, for work and play.

Many of those programs (MAMP Pro, TeamViewer, Parallels, VirtualBox, ... ) install their kernel extensions.

Now don't get me wrong, there may be perfectly good reasons to install and run all of those. But you don't seem to be running either Parallels or Virtual Box at the moment, and still your mac is killing processes for lack of Ram (with 8GB).

I dare say it may be time for a cleanup.

All of this software should be readily available for reinstalling, so I'd take this as an opportunity, make a full clone of your drive, clean install, bring back the user accounts, and manually install back the software that you really use.

You also have a great number of login items... do you really need a Latin generator to start every time you log in?

True. I clean it up regularly, but there's stuff I have removed that doesn't seem to have uninstalled properly - like VirtualBox, Adobe stuff, MacFuse... The rest is genuinely useful. To be fair, I do push my Mac quite hard, with upwards of 6 desktops running regularly, several Atom/Sublime windows etc, but it's taken it quite well so far.

I don't really have time to reinstall everything from scratch, restore software preferences, restore all my work etc. So I guess I'll have to abandon AirDrop until I get a new Mac (we'll see about that tomorrow, eh?). Thanks for your help!

It would be a lovely surprise if we did, but tomorrow is expected to be about the iPhone...
