Q: iMac and MacBook Pro Photos Error

I have a MacBook Pro (Mid-2010) and an iMac (Late-2009). The MacBook runs Mountain Lion and the iMac has El Capitan (and another partition with Sierra). On the MacBook Pro, I am trying to export the photos (from iPhoto) as .JPEGS, but I get an error saying unable to create /Users/name/Pictures (which is the location I selected). So I tried grabbing one (individually) and dragging to the desktop and it said "Cannot export DSCXXXX.jpeg because there is no such file" (Even though the photo is right in front of me). I got a thumb drive and went into /Users/name/Pictures and dragged iPhotos Library onto the thumb drive. After it copied, I plugged it into my iMac and opened the iPhotos Library. It converted it into a Photos library, but I'm still getting the same error messages. Thanks in advance!

This error message usually means that iPhoto cannot access the original image file. What you are seeing in the iPhoto browser are the thumbnail images. But iPhoto needs to use the original image file you imported to export a version of the file or to edit it.  As a test, try to edit one of the photos you cannot export. Does that work, or do you get the same error message about the missing file?

Select the photo in iPhoto's browser and use the command "File > Reveal in Finder > Original file". Is the image file there?

If photos cannot access the original file, it might be a library corruption, or the photos have been removed.

Try to rebuild the iPhoto Library: Old Toad described how to do it in this post:  Re: iPhoto has crashed on a number of occasions, but on 2 occasions also seems to delete several events, including the one I'm editing. When I go to reimport the last event, it shows them as already there. But I can't find them.

I just upgraded the MacBook Pro to El Capitan. I get this:Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 2.16.25 PM.png

I selected an image and tried to locate it and got this:Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 2.18.15 PM.png

Show referenced file in Finder is greyed out.

Lastly, I tried repairing the photo library. No difference. It's also worth noting that the photos are very pixelated when I double click them, and they look like blown up thumbnails.

iPhoto will show any original file in the Finder, while Photos will only reveal referenced files.  II meant you to try ""File > Reveal in Finder > Original file" on the original iPhoto Library you migrated to Photos to check, if the original iPhoto Library still contained the missing files, or if they already had been lost from your iPhoto Library.

Or did you not update iPhoto to version 9.6.1 so you can still use it?

If the originals cannot be accessed, the thumbnails are all you can get to show the photos, and then they will be pixelated.

Ctrl-click the Photos Library and select "Show Package Contents".  In the window that opens, look for a folder "Masters".  It should contain the full size original image files, in nested subfolder Year > Month > Day of import. Can you find the originals for your pixelated photos there?  Are the photos in the full resolution?

Do the same for the original iPhoto library and inspect the Masters folder there. If your iPhoto version is older than iPhoto 9.3, the Masters folder will not be there, but a folder "Originals" instead.

Is the file system on this thumbs drive MacOS Extended (Journaled)? If not the transfer might have caused the missing files. I'd repeat the transfer with a drive with a MacOS Extended file system and the
