Q: Why does my apple tv keep saying to turn on home sharing on my computer when it is already on?

I can play all of my purchased movies and apps etc just fine on my appletv. My problem is when I go to play a  movie from my itunes library it will not let me, telling me to make sure home sharing is on. It's turned on, on my computer, my appletv etc. I have restarted it, I have restored it, and I have reset it and it's a constant headache. No matter what I've done I can't get my itunes library to show up.

I have two suggestions that you may have not tried:

People have reported trouble with ATV and the advanced types of Apple ID validation. Try changing your iTunes account back to password only. Obviously, this is not ideal, but may be required until Apple fixes ATV software.

Some routers don't route the multicast packets used for discovery between subnetworks. Things work best with server and ATV on the same wifi network. This may apply especially to Stokjeros' complex configutation. The fact that it "works" intermittently points to this. After the right amount of manipulation, these packets seem to leak through somehow. But eventually it goes back to "normal" and too bad. I experienced these symptoms long ago with AirPlay, and switching everthing to wifi fixed it. Of course some routers (newer, different make?) handle this smoothly, so YMMV.

I can't get Apple TV to recognize the library on my mac mini. I am signed into iTunes with sharing on. I know everything is set up right because it does recognize the library on my PC under the same apple account. I have spent hours trying to fix this but nothing seems to work.

I have this issue as well.

    64gb Apple TV

    Alienware 17 Win10 laptop.

Open iTunes on the laptop, then go to "Computers" on the Apple TV.

Apple TV give the message to turn on Home Sharing.

Home sharing is on and signed into on the laptop.

On the laptop, I have to turn off Home Sharing, then turn it back on which then prompts to enter Apple ID & pw.

Once I do this, it shows my library on the Apple TV.

I don't need to do anything on the Apple TV, just simply toggle off/on Home Sharing on the laptop.
It's not a huge deal, but this should not be happening. Once Home Sharing is on, both my Apple TV's should be able to see the computer as long as iTunes is running.

Hope this helps others as toggling Home Sharing on the laptop is much easier/faster than some of the suggestions I have read on this thread.

    Regards,

    Dan
