You should post Pages related questions in the Pages for Mac Support Community.

You are attempting to open a Pages v5 document in Pages '08 or '09 which does not support the Pages v5 document format. Quit your Pages '08 or '09 application, and then double-click the same document to have it open in Pages v5.

When you are in Pages '08, '09, or even v5, the red traffic light on the document title bar only closes the current document, and does not quit Pages.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages '09 is in your Applications/iWork '09 folder.

Pages 5.x is in your Applications folder.

You are double clicking on a Pages 5.x document and it is being opened by Pages '09 which can not open the later version's documents.

Instead right click on the document and choose the orange icon Pages 5.x App to open it with, or drag the document to the Pages 5.x icon, or open the document from inside Pages 5.x.
