You can only get videos into the Videos app by downloading them directly on the iPad via the iTunes Store app (redownloading a past iTunes store purchase requires it to remain in the store and you not to move countries after being it), or syncing them from your computer's iTunes library - you can't, for example, use the camera connection kit to copy them to the Videos app (the kit only works with the Photos app and store purchases won't play there) or stream them from a wifi-enabled drive.

Video media in iTunes can be categorized as "home video" in the get info for that title under the Media Kind of the Options tab, however a copyrighted movie may not be copied to mp4 depending on the laws of a specific country. You may import "home movies" to the device for iTunes video media that was not purchased through Apple or linked to an Apple ID through another service.

Can the movies from iTunes be stored on a portable storage device hard drive for future use in which to create free space for further movies, save downloading all the time ? and as I only have a wi fi apple ipad while out doors I cannot download from iTunes.

Storage device similar to this one which is 64gb

Films (and TV shows) from the iTunes store have digital-rights-management on them, so on an iOS device can only be played in the Videos app, not from a third-party app - I don't think that you will be able to play iTunes purchased films on it

I was on Live Chat with Apple earlier and asked

1: If the movies (Purchased) not rent from I tunes can be stored on an ex hard drive or flash drive ?

    Answer Was YES !

2: Can the movies be played from the storage Device ?

Answer was Yes !   maybe he misunderstood ?

As I was curious once downloaded onto the e.g Flash Drive as I only have wi fi and no cellular data while out

I cannot re download movies !

so will it play from the storage Device ?

Once stored on the storage device can it be played on Apple TV also ?

Answer: Not 100% sure as there is no USB socket !

But surely Apple TV has the lightning socket to plug it into.

He was not 100% sure and stated it is a Good idea and he shall look into it for his own personal use !

In order to play a movie on your iOS device off an external storage device, it usually has to be played within the app for provided by the developer of the storage device. Those apps generally can't play DRM content from the iTunes Store.

You can't just open the built in Video app and select something on the external storage device.

Hi many Thanks for all your replies !

I forward these questions to Apple agent and obviously misunderstood my question.

I was hoping once stored on a storage device it would work like plugging it into a PC once it appears you could play it.

I was also hoping that if I bought Apple TV I could just plug it into the Apple TV Device and play it.

So Deep down we can only store our movies on a portable storage device for future use save time and effort downloading.
