Q: Photo not importing photos from iphone 6s

My Macbook (Mid 2010) is running El Capitan 10.11.6 and Photo (version 1.5 - using an iphone 6s (iOS 9.3.5)

When i plug my phone in, and go to import (in Photos) it shows I have 900+ new images to import.  I tried selecting the 250 I wanted to import and clicked 'Import'.  Although it said it was importing, nothing happened for over 30 mins.  Decided to force quit Photo.

Had a good look around discussion forums (Apple) and tried to rebuild my library which I have done.  I just connected my phone again and decided to try and import 45 pics - same thing - it says importing but nothing happens.  The thumbnails also do not load at import screen instead I have grey boxes with rectangles inside.

I cannot get my Macbook to import any photos and need to take some off so that I can have them on here - sentimental reasons.

Can anyone offer any help at all?  Thanks in advance.

There may be a problem with your Photos Library.  Have you tried to import from your iPhone using the standard Image Capture application?  If Image Capture can import the photos to a folder, you can then try to import from this folder to your Photos Library.

I Haven't tried that thank you.

i've just shared the images on iCloud and trying to work around it that way for now.

Is Image Capture a preloaded app or will I have to download that?

Image Capture should be in your Applications folder. It comes with every Mac as the standard application to import photos or to scan photos.  Because it is a standard application the name is different , depending on the primary system language set in the System Preferences on your Mac. But the icon will be the same, independent of the system language - a camera and a few pictures:
