Q: OS X software update failed

Hi

I bought my Mac about 6 years ago and I never updated it. As a result lots of the features stopped working so I decided to update to the OS X El Capitan software.

The installation failed even after several attempts and now I am stuck on the OS X installer screen and I don't know how to go back to how my Mac was originally before I tried updating it.

I tried quitting the installer and choosing a startup disk. However when I try to restart it using the disk it says "Startup Disk could not gather enough information on the selected disk"

I also tried restarting the computer and holding the option key. A screen appears but it only allows me to choose "OS X Installer" which brings me back to the installer screen.

All I want is to get my Mac back to how it was before I tried updating it. I would greatly appreciate any help from anyone!

Thanks
