Q: Burn DVD5 movie to DVD disc

Hello,

I have a movie file which is in format DVD5

My computer is MacBook Pro running Yosemite.

After I burn this movie to DVD disc I can't play it because it consists of many other files and they are not recognizible and etc.

I used converter HandBreake which converted movie into m4v format. After that it was not a problem to burn and watch movie.

My question: does Mac have any utility or trick that would allow burn DVD5 format directly to disc and play with no problem?

In other words: having DVD5 file should I always convert it first before burning?

Thanks

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

As far as I can tell DVD5 is with reference to the amount of data on a DVD, nothing to do with movie format. In that regard this is like you asking, "I have a word on a piece of paper, how do I put it on a piece of paper?"

Very likely your movie is in a video DVD format. Open it using DVD Player.  There are no utilities for converting that are native to the Mac since with the exception of home videos just about all movie conversion involves an illegal step.

    Thanks for explanation

Does it mean that in order to burn movie in DVD format I should reformat it first?

You need to establish what format your original movie is in. A movie already in DVD format would consist of a folder called VIDEO_TS inside of which would be various files which might look like the following

           18.432 VIDEO_TS.BUP
           18.432 VIDEO_TS.IFO
       23.007.232 VIDEO_TS.VOB
           18.432 VTS_01_0.BUP
           18.432 VTS_01_0.IFO
       12.619.776 VTS_01_0.VOB
           24.576 VTS_01_1.VOB
          116.736 VTS_02_0.BUP
          116.736 VTS_02_0.IFO
      188.835.840 VTS_02_0.VOB
    1.073.739.776 VTS_02_1.VOB
    1.073.739.776 VTS_02_2.VOB
    1.073.739.776 VTS_02_3.VOB
    1.073.739.776 VTS_02_4.VOB
      818.886.656 VTS_02_5.VOB
           24.576 VTS_03_0.BUP
           24.576 VTS_03_0.IFO
           10.240 VTS_03_0.VOB
      496.572.416 VTS_03_1.VOB
           47.104 VTS_04_0.BUP
           47.104 VTS_04_0.IFO
           10.240 VTS_04_0.VOB
    1.073.739.776 VTS_04_1.VOB
      889.948.160 VTS_04_2.VOB
           18.432 VTS_05_0.BUP
           18.432 VTS_05_0.IFO
           10.240 VTS_05_0.VOB
       48.990.208 VTS_05_1.VOB

If however your original file is for example a computer video file and not a DVD format then you need to either pre-convert it, or use a burning tool which can do the conversion for you.

Here is a free DVD burning tool which can not only burn VIDEO_TS folders to DVDs but can also take a computer movie file for example a file produced using iMovie and then both convert it to DVD format and burn it.

What is the format of the actual files you wish to burn?

What is the desired format you wish to have?  How are you going to use this?  Anything can be put on a DVD -- a "DVD" is just a storage device like a flash drive and can hold pretty much anything in any format.  The format files you put on it will determine how it can ultimately be used.  The fewer transformations they undergo the better the final quality.

The answer may also be influenced by your hardware. My TV, for example, can play computer format files directly.  I can attach a USB drive with a .mp4 or .mkv file and it will play it.

You are correct. My files look exactly as you posted i.e. VIDEO_TS

My goal is: burn this movie to DVD disc and then play on DVD player in my car.

I burned all those files inside VIDEO_TS to disc and then tried to play it on my Mac but it failed. (I did not check if it would play in car). After I converted it ... I did not have a problem.

I simply try to avoid to convert those files not to loose the quality hence I'd like to burn them 'as is'.

A properly structured DVD movie type disc has a name for the disc which is usually in uppercase only letters, inside that is the VIDEO_TS folder, and inside that are the files like the example listing I previously gave.

If you have burned the disc so it does not have a VIDEO_TS folder but does have the files then it will not be in the structure a normal DVD player is expecting.

Also try using the Burn program I linked to.
