(When using home sharing with iTunes on an external hard drive with Apple TV).
When i first power up the Apple TV, the message that the sharing is off comes up.
So i logon with the ID no problem but the problem is how often i have to do it (around 80% of the time). any ideas how to stop this?

Is your computer running Windows or OS X?
Is your network set up with manual IP addresses or DHCP?
Are you waiting a minute or two between firing up the iTunes library and attempting to connect to it from the Apple TV?

The computer is OS X El Capitan.
An IP address for the network.
I only switch off the computer once a week and iTunes is always on during this time,
i use Energy saver to switch off the display.
So everything is on just resting.
