None of the AV products "catch" adware. It is actually "legitimate" software that you approved to install (albeit you were probably tricked into allowing it).

It was originally written by one of the contributors here, but was bought up by MalwareBytes.

check box I didnt see and clicked 'Install' all on my own. I found a phony virus protector under my Extensions section of Preferences. I trashed the phony extension and tavanero and polhue
both disappeared. Chrome back to normal since. Dont know about Avira never used it.

Sep 7, 2016 8:03 AMby thomas_r.,The Chrome store is a cesspool of adware and crap extensions. Even formerly good extensions that get abandoned by the developer are often obtained by adware creators and changed into adware via an "update."
If you use Chrome, the best thing you can do is use as few browser extensions as possible. This is true for any browser, mind you... but it's especially important in Chrome, where the presence of a large store full of cross-platform browser extensions can infect large numbers of people with little effort.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac will not always detect every one of these extensions - no similar software will either. If you find an ad-injecting Chrome extension that we don't detect, please let us know. You can select Contact Support from the Help menu in Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac to alert us to something like this.
