Q: I have a problem with backing up my iPhone   iPad iPod

I have a problem with backing up my iDevices! When I tried to backup my iPhone 6+ 128 GB phone iTunes said I didn't have enough memory. My Macbook had over a hundred GBs free the phone was Not backed up! We need an option to BU to external drive. My macbook is limited and when I'm out at sea there is no internet. I Have a 128 GB iPhone a 32GB ipod a 64-32 & 256GB iPads. Not having an option to use external drive in iTunes is limiting this so I'll have to rethink my support of apple products and recommendations to purchase them. Cite case number ********

Whoever told you you can't keep iTunes Library on an external drive is incorrect.

iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer (Mac or Windows):

The process of moving iTunes from a computer to an external drive is the same.

So how do you backup you ipad or iPhone or iPod to an external drive? When I tried to backup my iPhone with 75GB it said not enough memory to backup despite having over a hundred GBs free? The only option to backup is to the MacBook or the cloud. Now that will not work for me since other than on this phone my wifi is real shaky from the marina and it is non existint in the middle of the ocean!

Once you move your entire iTunes folder to the external drive and re-link the iTunes app to that library, everything added to iTunes will be added on that external drive. See below for how to link it.

If you're getting what you know is incorrect information about free storage amount on your drive (which will increase after you move the iTunes library, then remove it from the Mac drive), forcing Spotlight to reindex the drive should correct the issue. To check drive storage select About This Mac from the Apple menu.

Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support

    --------

iTunes: Linking to new or external HD library:

    * Open iTunes while holding down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows).

    * In the resulting dialog, click the Choose Library button.

    * Select the iTunes folder you moved to the external hard drive.

    * Click Choose (Mac OS X) or Open (Windows) and then choose the iTunes Library file inside .
