Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

    Hi shrekinah

Let me ask you a question by the other way:

Did you consider to buy a 2 years will-be-dead device with such highly price?

    I wont, and you?

after going through all the hassle... I managed to get a mildly used macbook pro with much better specs than my Air had.. I also saw a bit into the "underworld" of used macbooks and macbook repair(unauthorized). Because of your lack of knowledge repair stores take serious advantage of you. The "failed" logic board excuse is their favourite. They can charge you for a new logic board that may or may not end up in your mac. Maybe your mac has a minor problem, they can blow it out of proportion and this works to their advantage obviously. Be careful.

I Don't even know how to go about lodging a complaint. I called apple and the operator said there's really nothing they can do as there is no program for the generation of Apple MacBook Air that I own. Anybody knows how to start a petition To Apple?

    Hey,

I have the same macbook air model that you have i have been through with this problem numerous times. I went to apple care and they also ran a diagnostics and gave me the same reply that your logic board is not functioning. Please dont spend any money on fixing this issue. It apparently is a issue with the mid 2013 macbook air 11 models. what i did was bring it back home and kept it at home for a few days. after a few days i charged the battery completely and then did a smc reset and tried starting it up and it booted up. Dont worry its an issue with all the similar macbooks, it will start up again after a few days. Just be a little patient. Hope this helps.

Hey everyone, so I have the same problem as you guys. The repairs cost $1115 NZD which is half the laptop. I managed to get this REPAIRED FOR FREE under the Consumer Guarantees Act of NZ. I called the Apple Care hotline and explained my situation, and they said they would repair the laptop at no cost.

So if you have the same problem, and your laptop is 2-3 years of use, maybe look for an act in your country that proves your rights! Glad to say that I'm getting my laptop fixed without a single penny shed.

Thank you for this suggestion.  I took my MacBook to an Apple Authorized repair shop.  They said that the diagnostics showed that the logic board was faulty.  They recommended buying a new MacBook because the cost of replacing the logic board was more than 50% of a new MacBook.  I told them that I did not want the computer repaired and that I would pick it up in a few day. When I arrived at the shop I asked the repairman which component on the logic board had failed.  He claimed that the diagnostics didn't show what had failed and that you cannot do component level repair.  This is not true.  There are shops that do these repairs but because Apple does not provide the diagnostic software to non-authorized shops these repairman must visually inspect the board's thousand of components and this can cost more than a replacement.  But that is an aside; the gentleman tells me that the entire board is bad and he stands by his diagnosis.  Now this is the really funny part...  I tell him that someone (utsav) on the Apple message board said that if you wait a few days the computer will turn on.  I press the on button, and the computer boots up.  I look at the gentleman and he says "I stand by my diagnosis."

Thank you so much for your suggestion, utsav.  My computer has been working just fine.  Now, I always turn the computer off (not hibernate or sleep) whenever I am not using it.  Previously, I had noticed that the fan was running a lot.  Someone has posted a video on youtube of another way to fix the problem  Unfortunately, I cannot find where I saved the link.  In his video he showed how to open the computer and unplug the battery.  Then, you replace the back of the computer, plug the computer into the electrical power source and turn on the computer.  Turn off the computer, unplug it from the power source and plug in the battery.  This was Apple's fix for a similar problem with an older Mac (one that did not have an internal battery.

    Oh my...I feel you

I bought my Macbook Air a year and a half ago, together with 3yr Apple Care Protection Plan. One fine day last July I switched it off, the next day it refused to power up. Sent in for repair. Then it works fine for 1 year, This year July,l was using it when it died on me (having all my work unsaved), sent in for repair and got the Main Logic Board replaced, lucky i still have my Apple. But just 2 weeks after the replacement, my Macbook Air died again!!! omg... I call Apple asking for a replacement and they have been really unhelpful and they kept beating around the bush. So i sent in for another diagnosis again and they told me the MLB died- AGAIN! How is that possible? I am so disappointed with the support service and how they handle this situation. Now I have been without laptop for quite a while and I can't do my work properly.

    Seriously, unhappy customer max!
