Q: Why is Safari so slow and does not block pop-ups??

Just typing this post was an excercise in patience.  I constantly get the bouncing ball while waiting to continue typing.

My Prefs has 'Block pop-up windows' checked and yet no matter what website I visit I constantly have to put up with pop-up videos.  This behavior has been going on over the past few months.

I am using V9.1.2 (11601.7.7).

Thanks.

OK, I walked through the TextWrangler suggestion and found that my code matched exactly the paste-in Host code, so I just left it as it was.  I also followed the Wacom driver suggestion and deleted my Wacom Tablet driver for good measure.

    Bottom line

I seem to see slight improvement, but as I began typing this post I once again was confronted with the bouncing ball and had to wait to continue typing.  On webpages that are long Safari still locks up, but not as bad as it was prior to the driver deletion.  Further webpage testing reveals that pages continue to freeze without getting the bouncing ball.

This all very annoying and am not certain that I have made any real improvements to this problem.  Time will tell, I suppose.

    Thanks!

I just shut down Safari and re-launched it while watching the Activity Monitor and was shocked to see that on start-up Safari used 7 GB of ram.  The Safari Networking is using 23.6 MB of ram.  My iMac now has 32GB and wonder how  Safari got by when I only had 8 GB?

After Safari launched its 'Real mem' value is 3.78 GB of ram.  That seems excessive to me since I only have two webpages open, so apparently Safari needs lots of ram to operate with.

There are several possible reasons for what you are encountering.

    Begin with the following:

    1. Shut down your Mac.
    2. Load OS X Recovery by holding and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac with a third finger.
    3. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, release those two fingers.
    4. Choose Get Help Online.
    5. Safari will launch, but it will lack your bookmarks, favorites, history and other preferences.
    6. Load a few web pages and observe the results.

Restart your Mac normally and describe your results.

If the problem does not occur in Recovery mode, but returns after restarting your Mac normally, please read If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support. The applicable section is "Remove Internet plug-ins and other add-ons" and the Support documents that follow "Learn more".

If there is no change in behavior while in Recovery mode please write back for more suggestions.

    Thank you for your post.

I did as you instructed, but could not loan any websites because Safari claimed that I was not on the net when indeed I was when I shut my iMac down.  So I could not load any websites to check Safari's behavior.

I have also downloaded and run EtreCheck and will post those results below.

    Thanks again for your help.

Just out of curiosity, this is one of the website pages I am having so much trouble with.  It is an iOS keypad tutorial and Activity Monitor shows it to be using 2.27 GB of ram.  This seems excessive to me, but it does have lots of ads.

    Thanks!

You might have to manually select your wireless network in the Mac's menu bar: yosemite-disconnected_icon-public.png

Your wireless network's name also cannot be "hidden": AirPort: Unable to join a Wi-Fi network with hidden SSID (Wi-Fi network name) - Apple Support.

If you did that, and you are using a wireless network that requires just a password (not a login screen where you have to agree to "terms and conditions" before you can go online) that's going to present a challenge. Is there something unusual about the wireless router or access point you're using?

When I click that link, it just redirects to this same page.

Copy the link from Safari's URL field and paste it in a reply, assuming that's not what you already did.

Try uninstalling the above using the developer's uninstall instructions.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

    @John Galt

I restart my iMac holding down CMD-r and found the wireless icon to the right of the flag icon.  It was nearly impossible to see it was so faint, but I did get on the net.  Safari ran flawlessly save for a strange 'translucent' horizontal bar than ran across the web page.  I tested Safari on several pages and it never locked up nor did I see the beach ball.

Now I will go back and read the link you provided earlier.

    Thanks again for your help.

Oh, BTW, I turned off the only two Safari extensions that I am using.  This made no difference.

HOLY COW!!  I followed the instructions from the link you provided : If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support.

and Safari is screaming fast now.  Here are the details of what I found in the Library:

    ---

    in Library >

    Folder > Internet Plug-Ins

had a folder entitled Disabled Plug-Ins

contained one plugin :  QuickTime Plugin.plugin

      and one file :  nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt

I moved all to the trash save for these per the instructions as follows:

      Don't remove Default Browser.plugin,

      nslQTScriptablePlugin.xpt,

      Quartz Composer.webplugin, or

      QuickTime Plugin.plugin.

    Folder > Input Methods

      This folder is MT

    Folder > Input Managers

contained one folder :  SIMBL > contained two files:  Info and SIMBL.bundle

      Moved all to trash

    Folder > ScriptingAdditions

Contained two files:  Adobe Unit Types and Adobe Unit Types.osax

      Moved all to trash

    ---

The only odd thing was that the > Internet Plug-Ins folder had a folder entitled 'Disable Plug-Ins'.

Also in the Library was another similar folder entitled 'Internet Plug-Ins (Disabled)'. This folder contains 1 item: 'Flash Player.plugin'.  I left that as it was.

Must I replace all of these folders to find the 'bad' one?  I probably already know the answer to that.

Thanks again for the link and your help.

    Thank you for your post.

I have followed the instructions via the following link:  If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support

and as noted earlier, Safari is running flawlessly fast once again.  (I have yet to begin replacing the files to determine which is/are the corrupt one(s).  But while I had the Lib folder open I thought I would follow your instructions as well.  That said, I removed 'Cache.db' to the trash.

Both of my Extensions have been disabled as well.

    Thanks again for your help.
