Q: iPhone 6s (iOS9.3.3) asks for apple ID I never used before

Hey guys

I was resetting my friend's phone and after reset iPhone asks for an email that was never used on that device. We both don't know anything about that email address.

Before i resetting the phone, I checked the device if icloud is still signed in and I found it's not signed in.

 

And i searched google and found someone with the same problem with me.

It appears that you have encountered Activation Lock. Did your friend purchase this phone brand new from Apple or an authorized retailer? If not, then I would say the previous owner did not remove the device from their iCloud account. You would need to get in touch with the previous owner if you wish to activate the phone. If your friend did purchase the device new, then they would need to get a copy of the original receipt and bring that and the device to a physical Apple store and ask for assistance.

    Return the phone to its rightful owner who does use that Apple ID email address.

    She purchased this phone brand new but not from an authorized retailer. She unboxed it herself. Is there any possibilities that this device is used and re-packaged?

    The shop's (where she bought this phone) serviceman keeps implying that my friend used that email to sign in her iCloud on this device so it caused this problem. Is that possible?

    Anything is possible. If it is not from an authorized retailer, it is difficult to tell where it came from and where it was supposed to be sold at. You can go to this website and put in the serial number to check on warranty coverage, and it would show when the warranty ends, and the sale date would be a year before that. https://checkcoverage.apple.com/

    If it wasn't an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Reseller, then the phone wasn't new. Sounds like she has been duped.

     

    Not sure what you mean when you say that your friend used that email to sign into her iCloud account. If she doesn't recognize the email address, how could she have signed into iCloud with it?

    Not unless it is her Apple ID

    It was the serviceman's theory but she didn't signed in with that email address.


    Even if she did signed in, is it possible that iCloud sign-in can effect the activation lock?
    I am confused.

    Only the correct ID and password can unlock it, so if she does not know what that is she can not use the phone any longer. Apple can not unlock it.

    If your friend didn't use that Apple ID to set it up, the phone wasn't new and congratulations on acquiring a stolen/lost iPhone.  Your only chance of using your iPhone now is if the "unauthorized dealer" will give you a new one.
