Q: Mailbox rebuild questions

I am looking to fix my IMAIL. it is running extremely slow, hard to even type a sentence without it stalling everyone 10-15 sec. I was told to rebuild each mailbox? do I need to backup the emails in them if they are gmail accounts? I am afraid to loose all my work information and emails. ?

To be on the  safer side please take back of all mails before you rebuild each mail box .

As some mails might be deleted from the server or if network speed is slow , some mails will not be downloaded successfully .

    Thanks !

If your gMail is IMAP there should be no worry, if a POP account it's possible to lose some, but not likely… a backup is always safest.

Before you rebuild I'd do this...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
