Q: Unable to Print to Shared Printer

Mac OS 10.11.6

Mac Mini Early 2009, MacBook Air (mid 2012)

Canon LBP6000 with driver version 3.86

This printer is connected to the Mac Mini via USB and shared on my local LAN. Printing from the Mac Mini works just fine.

Although every computer and device on the LAN can "see" this printer, not everyone can print to it. For example, my wife's MacBook Air can see the printer as "Bonjour Shared". She can add it to the list of available printers using the current Canon driver (3.86). But, she can't print to it. The print job shows up momentarily in the local print queue but then disappears down some black hole.

Same problem with our daughter's older MacBook. It can see the printer, delete it and re-add it, but not print to it.

Oddly, I can print to this printer from my iPad and iPhone using the Printopia driver. The Printopia driver shows up on the MacBook Air, but it doesn't work either. The Printopia driver does work from the Mac Mini.

I have:

  • Reset the printing system, on the Mac Mini and on the laptop machines.
  • Reinstalled the printer on all machines.
  • Deleted unused printers from /Library/Printers.
  • Disabled Printopia to see if it is causing the problem. It is not,

I should note that when we first got this printer it worked fine as a shared printer. Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly when it stopped working reliably, as no one prints to it very regularly.

(Everyone's always in a hurry when they need to print. So, they just copy their document to the MacMini and print it from there. I'd like everyone to be able to print from their own machine….)

The only clue I have is the following from the cups error log:

E [08/Sep/2016:08:49:54 +0700] [Client 503] Bad URI "//printers/8025DFBF-E359-44F7-8315-A9CFA0256A4B" in request.

That appears several times in the MacMini cups log every time I try to print from the MacBook Air.

I should note that I upgraded to the latest Canon drive (3.87) on all machines. This did not fix the problem.

Apparently my only solution is to buy a new AirPrint compatible printer.

Somewhere down the line either Apple or Canon changed their software just enough to prevent bonjour sharing of the Canon LBP6000.

It seems a shame to have to discard what seems to be a perfectly functional laser printer just because the software stopped working.

Incidentally, I tried sharing the printer via CUPS/IPP rather than Bonjour, but that doesn't work either. The client machine connects to the host printer, but no data gets sent. Very frustrating.
