Q: how secured is lost mode?
My iPhone 6s was stolen about two weeks ago. only after a week later then the pending lost mode had activated/enabled. Is it possible for the thief to retrieve data such as documents and pictures, or reset the stolen phone if it is in the lost mode without me erasing the phone. Or is it possible for the thief to do so before the lost mode is activated (before the phone is put online by them).
What happen to the phone when it is go back offline in the lost mode? is it possible to be surf through the contacts, pictures, etc.
what happen to the phone when wrong passcode is entered several times?
If I erase the phone through find my iPhone apps, I understand that it is like giving the thief a new fresh phone. So is it safe for the phone to be remain under the lost mode.
I know it is impossible to get the phone back but at least no one else can never use it anyway.

Lost mode is your best bet to possibly hear from whomever has your phone and it also placed a passcode lock in place if you did not have one. If you enabled the "erase phone after 10 bad passcode attempts" that will happen when they try too many times.
Assuming of course you do not have an easy to guess password or passcode on the device.
Your data was made safe when you enabled Find My Phone. This put the activation lock in place. In order to remove the passcode, "they" can restore the phone using iTunes, but that will delete all your data. The phone is wiped clean.
However, they will then come up to the activation lock, which they can't defeat without your Apple ID and password.
So they can't even use your phone in any way.
