WeMentor Mondays with Nancy

Q: Changing RSS feed issues

I have been trying for several months to resolve my RSS URL podcast feed issue, ever since I deleted my Feedburner account (because I was having intermittent issues getting my podcast from my wementor.com website to iTunes.

The Feed Title at Feedburner was the name of my podcast: WeMentor Mondays with Nancy. The Feedburner Feed Address was http://feeds/feedburner.com/WeMentorMondayswithNancy

I deleted this account at Feedburner in April, and have had problems since. In my podcast account on iTunes all my weekly episodes show up but when I submit the RSS Feed I get the following message:

Dear Podcast Owner, an error was encountered when trying to add your feed. [http://wementor.com/feed/ ].

I can't even start over because the RSS feed URL directions do not help when the Mirror URL doesn't appear on the page.

Can you please help? Nancy

It looks like you're using the PowerPress plugin with a WordPress site. Is that accurate? If so, you'd be better off using the default PowerPress feed instead of the main WordPress feed, which you're currently using (wementor .com/feed). Use this feed instead: http://wementor.com/feed/podcast/

I ran both of these feeds thru a couple validators, and they both came up fine. I also tried to find your show's listing in the iTunes Store but it looks like it's been delisted. Please try and use the http://wementor.com/feed/podcast/ feed with Podcasts Connect and reply here if you're still having trouble. (disclosure: I work with the Blubrry support team)

    Hi Shawn,

Where do I find the WordPress feed on my site? I can't seem to find it. I feel dumb as dirt, aargh!

I submitted the http://wementor.com/feed/podcast/ to iTunes. I get the same errors I think because I haven't been able to change the default to the PowerPress feed, dah.

Log into your WordPress site. Click the PowerPress link in the left-hand sidebar. Switch to Advanced Mode if you're not already there. Click the Feeds tab. Look at the Podcast Feeds section. Your default podcast feed is listed next to Special Podcast only Feed. What's listed there is the feed URL you want to submit to iTunes.

I followed your directions. There is still a problem.

I clicked on the iTunes tab. Below is what I found. What do I do next?

    Advanced Options

    SETTINGS BELOW HAVE PERMANENT CONSEQUENCES.

    Feeds affected:

iTunes Block Prevent the entire podcast from appearing in the iTunes Podcast directory.
iTunes Complete Indicate the completion of a podcast. iTunes will no longer update your listing in the iTunes Podcast directory.

If you're asking about the iTunes Block and iTunes Complete checkboxes, you should leave those unchecked.

I am back at the beginning. My original question is the same. iTunes has rejected the http://wementor.com/feed/podcast/ and the http://wementor.com/feed/ feeds. I understand the boxes should not be checked. What does the following message mean?

    Advanced Options

    SETTINGS BELOW HAVE PERMANENT CONSEQUENCES.

    Feeds affected:

    http://wementor.com/feed/feed/
    http://wementor.com/feed/podcast/

I don't know how to resolve the issue. I need help to resolve this once and for all. A phone call would help instead of wasting all this time going back-n-forth with e-mails. ********

    Discouraged, disappointed, and unresolved.

The feed at http://wementor.com/feed/podcast/ can be subscribed to in iTunes and passes validation at Podcasts Connect. However there are some issues which might possibly cause a problems - please refer to the FeedValidator report.

Lines 32-38. Your 'itunes:summary' includes URLs where you have encoded the tags using the &lt and &gt codes; you must use the hexadecimal codes, however iTunes will not render these links but will show the coding, so you would be better off removing them altogether.

Line 53 you are using tags which are not referenced in the xmlns section at the beginning are so are meaningless to iTunes and this can in some cases cause problems. You should remove this line and the ten other occurrences of the same thing.

The report highlights issues with the 'content:encoded' tags; iTunes does not read these so it probably doesn't matter but by the same token it would be better to avoid possibly problems. In both these and the 'itunes:subtitle' and 'itunes:summary' tags it's advisable to stick to plain text and not attempt to include HTML coding.

The message you are asking shawnogordo about refers to two checkboxes which as he says you don't want to check, and warns that doing so will have permanent consequences (which is why you don't want to check them) so that particular setting area isn't relevant to you.

EDIT In the ten minutes since I posted FeedValidator has fallen over (again). Line 53 is

    <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">1181</post-id>

and this may or may not be problematic. The other references are clear from the context.
