Q: Numbers Crashing on Sierra

I'm running Numbers 3.6.2 on macOS Sierra Build 16A304a (Public Beta 6) on a mid-2010 MacBook 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with 8GB RAM.

I have an Expenses spreadsheet where, as the name suggests, allows me to input all my expenses for my different bank accounts. Daily, weekly and monthly totals are calculated within the same sheet and on another sheet in the same file I have a chart of account balance vs time, so whenever I enter a value in the Expenses sheet a bunch of calculations are completed. Since upgrading to Sierra Numbers has been crashing (on this spreadsheet only) when:

  • I don't save the document after every single cell I edit
  • I wait too long to save after editing a cell - typically 5-10 seconds
  • Take more than 2-3 seconds to edit a cell

This is extremely frustrating and results in numerous crashes per minute. Please help because I use this spreadsheet every day

Many thanks!

Beta software can not be discussed in the public forums.

You should not be running beta software on a production system. It's intended for testing.

Aw Is there any place I can get help for Sierra? I've already committed to Sierra on my main computer so I'd rather not go back. Alternatively, would you be able to help with the issue, under the assumption that it's an OS version independent problem?

You should NEVER deploy a public beta for use on a mission critical machine.  Move the document to another machine and modify the document on that other machine running a stable OS

Since you were not having these problems until you change OS it is logical to conclude the OS is, in fact, then problem.  So no-one here can assist.

Wayne has clearly told you that your problem can not be addressed here, that is not going to change no matter how many times you ask. Use a machine without a beta operating system if you want reliability.

The other idea I have is to move the document to iCloud and use the web interface until you can use Numbers on Sierra  reliably

I'll try the Numbers web interface until the issue gets resolved or when I can post here after the final release - thanks for the idea Wayne!

Just to clarify, I know it's not recommended to install macOS Sierra on your main machine but I chose to and make regular backups. Numbers crashing has been the only problem I've had with the OS over the last month and a half and I'm satisfied otherwise. I'll think more carefully next time I get presented with the opportunity to test beta software. Thanks for the tips.

Csound1, you essentially reiterated what Wayne and KiltedTim said before you, adding nothing to the conversation and sounding condescending in the process which I didn't appreciate - I didn't even ask again between Wayne's first post and yours so I'm not sure what you're on about.

Then don't read my replies, or the beta software rules either.
