Q: new MacBook - can't connect to iTunes

I bought a new MacBook this morning from a third party vendor (UK chain John Lewis Partnership, a major Apple retailer).

I can't complete set up as every time I try to log into iTunes it tells me there is a server error. I can log in using another device (on the same wifi connection).

I have tried three different wifi connections and a 4G hotspot. I can see it is connected on the hotspot. So my MacBook is connecting to the wifi but not to the iTunes server.

I then tried to register my new device on Apple Support page but that tells me that the date of purchase dos not agree with my serial number. If I want to send in proof of purchase to show I bought it today that will take three days.

But I don't want to wait three days to see if I have a duff computer -  I want to take it back now if it is faulty. I do not have time to go to the Genius Bar in my town until Sunday afternoon (today is Thursday morning UK time).

Any ideas?

It could be that Apple servers are tied up in the aftermath of yesterday's announcements but then you would have had the same problem with the other device(s). So I don't know but it's hard to see it as a hardware problem if you can connect to other web sites with the MacBook. You can do that, right?

I think that the registration question should go to John Lewis Partnership. Is it a refurbished computer? Maybe refurbished and sold as new? Certainly hold onto copies of your receipt and other proof of purchase.

Good luck, maybe others will have more to tell you about the iTunes question
