Maybe you already know this, but just in case...

A file that has the suffix .dmg is a disk image file containing the files that you may want to install. It is not the printer software itself. Ideally there may be an installer for the driver within the disk image. So double click on the .dmg and see what opens. Look for installable files in the now open epson16990.

There is a preference inside System Preferences called Printers and Scanners that allows you to choose the printer that you will be using.

Do you know that Epson has the printer software that works with Macs and with your operating system version?

I hope that this helps you get started in solving this problem.

W R, Thanks.  This is my daughter's computer and I have used only PC's for 20 plus years. The Geek Squad at Best Buy couldn't solve it during two visits including taking the printer with me. The last time they said she needs to upgrade the Operating System.  The only info on her MacBook is Model No. 1278.  I don't know how to find her current OS and version.

I have never had any contact with Geek Squad but there is a lot of doubt and cynicism about their abilities in general and re Macs in particular. If you live near an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Center

    https://locate.apple.com/

you might get more reliable help. Sometimes just as good is a friend or acquaintance with extensive Mac experience.

    Anyway, OS versions;

    1) go to the Apple Menu (top left corner) and choose About This Mac

The next screen you will see is approximately as below

The tabs at the top and the System Report... button lead to further information about the computer, maybe not so important for the immediate problem.

Generally I think that most people make a quick transition from Windows to Mac but there is no getting around the necessity of learning new things. Some opportunities to play and experiment with the computer may be a good start.

    Good luck,

Again, Thanks.  MacBook 5.1, System: Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a), Kernal Version: Darwin 9.8.0.  Did the Software Update but says "Software Update doesn't have any new software for your computer at this time"

Will her MacBook 5.1 take the latest (or later) software?

The MacBook 5,1 seems to be what Apple calls "MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)."

My reading of system upgrades for this machine upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6.8) seems possible

System requirements for OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6 - Apple Support

Snow Leopard is a paid upgrade ($20 US) and I don't know if you can still buy it. Try this webpage

    http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

All of this is interesting though it may not answer the original question of whether there is an Epson printer driver for your computer running 10.5.8 or 10.6.8.

I did notice that, if you like learning from books (my preference), there is a Missing Manual book about Switching to Mac.
