Last question. Were the folders with the pictures, inside iPhoto or were they separate folders inside your Pictures folder?

I see. You could try signing in to iCloud.com with your Apple I.D. from your browser and click on Photos and iCloud Drive and see if any are there. If not, in the process of restoring your iPad they may have been deleted. The photos are not still on your iPad I assume.

Installing El Capitan should not have erased your iPhoto Library. About your only option I think is to try a Data Recovery program but since you installed El Capitan the chances are any photos on the drive would have been written over. Plus you would need an external drive to recover to. If you still want to try Data Rescue 4 is more or less the standard but if it found any files they would have generic names.

There is a free trial but if I remember correctly you have to purchase it in order to recover the files.

I'm afraid without any back up, either a Time Machine back up or iCloud there isn't much of a chance to recover the pictures. Sorry.

Based on that screen shot, you have somewhere north of 300 photos in the iPhoto Library.

How many do you think you had?

Barney made me think of something. Your iPhoto Library is more than twice the size of your Photo Library. Try right-clicking on the iPhoto Library and select "Open With…" > Photos.

Any because I hadn't given or put these pics that are coming up into a named folder these are the ones that come up like that pic I sent you earlier, these I have t had a chance to put them into a folder that I would with an event title is day out if you see what I mean

I assume you meant "Photos' and not "Preview". So even though the folders aren't listed did you click on "All Photos" and see if any of the missing pictures are there?

I don't know what that means. I asked you how many photos you think you had. What you think you had can't be "still" anything.

I Realize you are being pulled in a dozen different directions, but it will be impossible to help if you don't filter out the noise.

It appears that your photos are still in the iPhoto library. I can help you recover those, but I need to know that we are going in the right direction. So, how many photos did you think you had in iPhoto before you did the upgrade?

Sorry, since Barney seems to feel any help that is offered by anyone but himself is "noise", I'm going to leave him to it.

    good luck.
