Q: email icon shows incoming messages but no email in inbox

My ipad email icon says that I have 1422 unread emails.  There are no messages in any of my email boxes.  In, sent, trash, drafts - all empty.  How do I get the icon to stop showing the red 1422 on he icon?   Already tried restarting the ipad.

iPad, iOS 9.3.5

    Hi rlkb,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

I see that your Mail app shows 1,422 unread emails, but there are no messages in any of the email boxes. You'd like to have the Mail app icon stop showing the red badge icon that shows 1,422 unread. I completely understand. I always want to make sure that my Mail app shows the correct amount of unread messages. I have a few things that I would like you to try.

First, please force close the Mail app, and then re-open. The following article will help you force close:

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Next, use the following article to give your iPhone a restart restart:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you still have an issue after that, let's delete the email account since you have no messages, and the re-add the account. You can delete the account by following this path: Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Select Account > Delete Account. The following article will help you set the email account back up:

Set up an email account on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    Best Regards.

Does the email account use an 'all mail' &/or 'archive' folder (these may only be available on a PC or webmail)? If so the emails may be there.
