Q: Watch Locked Down After Resale - Purgatory

HI,

I just sold an Apple Watch on eBay. I reset before sending.

Buyer cannot pair it because it is bound to my iCloud account. I was not aware AWatch was locked in this way.

My watch does not show in iCloud > Settings as one of my devices.

It does not show in Find Phone as a device.

I contacted Apple support. They need original receipt AND the serial to unlock it.

I purchased from Apple Store Online, very early on 1st day of release. I have the receipt from Apple Store but it does not show the serial.

Links from the original order receipt into the Apple Store to get the serial no longer work. I do not have the serial written down.

Have spent 40 mins on phone with Apple Support. I have no way to release the watch and am relying on cooperation of buyer to send me the serial.

Any advice appreciated.

In the meantime, 'sellers beware'.

    Hi

If Apple is not able to remove the lock for you once you have the serial number, the following process should remove Activation Lock from the watch.

Here is the solution to remove activation lock without the watch:

About Activation Lock on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

At the bottom it will tell you how to remove it.

    Hope this helps!

    Man, this is lame!

They should have made a bigger deal when they introduced this 'feature'.

The 'feature' does not help me as a consumer. It only helps Apple by disrupting the resale market.

I had the exact same issue and it has been utter ****.  Sold my Watch to a buyer through a third-party site, did everything Apple said to do to reset Watch to factory settings, and now the buyer is locked out. Watch doesn't appear in iCloud.  I was assigned a "senior advisor" to help with the problem who was nice at first but it is now one week later and I have not gotten a resolution. I went to Target to get a copy of my receipt (from 9 months ago) and sent that as proof of purchase.  Apparently that's not good enough because Target doesn't print the customer's name on the receipt, it only shows the last four digits of the credit card used.  I tried also sending a photo of the credit card to prove that the last four digits match my credit card, but still nothing has happened.  So looking back:  sent them proof of purchase, which shows the date the watch was purchased which matches to when I activated it with my Apple ID, shows that I purchased it with a credit card in my possession that matches a photo ID.

My buyer is obviously very frustrated and at this point, it looks like I'll have to buy it back from him, pay for shipping costs to return it to me, and then I'm stuck with this watch I didn't want before anyway.

Extremely disappointed in Apple's lack of assistance; I had to constantly call and harass them to get the smallest of updates.

So yes, sellers beware!  Do everything you can to make sure that Watch is no longer linked to you.

After a couple calls to Apple Support they told me to have the buyer send me the serial number of the watch (they were unable to retrieve it form the Apple Store).

I had to write it on the original receipt form the online Apple Store, then send it in to Apple Support.

After that they unlocked the watch in a couple hours and sent email to confirm.

Hopefully fixed now, but have not had confirmation from buyer.
