Saphire glass reportedly costs 10 times (or more) as much to make as Corning's and other companies current tenpered high strength glass(es) already in use. It's also heavier as it's over half again as dense as tempered glasss. Also, at the thinknesses typically used for smart phone screens, it would likely be even more likely to shatter than tempered glass since synthetic sapphire is more brittle than tempered glass (note that synthetic saphire watch crystals are much thicker than a typical smart phone glass sheet).
So all saphire glass offers is higher scratch resistence, less shatter resistance, and much higher cost. I have no idea why so many people want manufacturers to use it.
