I've had this problem many times. I was so scared that the phone was broken but its easy to fix. Just hold down the power button for 3 seconds then hold the home button (at the same time as the power button) until the apple logo appears. I honestly didn't think this was going to work, but my screen lit up within seconds! Hope this helps

Let me just echo what others have said, with an anecdote. After the system update for the iPhone, the screen does stay dark for a long time. What Apple may not have addressed is the fact that "The Black Pause" lasts more than a few minutes. The phone seems to take a long time to reconfigure itself. More than once I have been tempted to abort the process because I was myself in panic mode. New users may be especially in panic mode. Every time I give the phone time to do its business, it comes back okay. Apple may have issued a warning or caution at some point, but I'm a longtime user and have been an Apple guy since the early 80's, and I had to find this forum to calm my nerves. Bottom line: In most cases, give it time, and the iPhone will eventually get the update handled and come back to life. The advice about soft reset also works. It's a good idea to check this forum before jumping off a bridge or throwing your iPhone into the swimming pool in frustration.
