Q: OS 9 (Mac g4) font migration

Hi there,

We got my dad a new iMac (updated OS) but he was a graphic designer in the 2000s. He's still been using his old mac G4 for the odd graphic design project.

The problem is I have no idea how to migrate his entire G4 font library to this new iMac... Is that even possible?

Thanks!

You said he had been "using it for the odd graphic design project" - which means to me that it boots and works OK for his needs

Maybe you should start over and tell us all!

If you Dad was a designer, he is likely very well acquainted with his Mac... why not get his help in crafting a complete story of his old Mac for us?

Start with   Menu > About this Mac - you can post what you read or take a screenshot

Command + SHIFT > 4 THEN SPACEBAR will turn the cursor into a camera > click anywhere in the bounds of the panel/window

the shot will save to the desktop

camera tool in the compose window here will guide you inserting the image

I believe it will depend on the font formats. I think truetype fonts can work but other formats like suitcase may not work.

If you have a disk or USB drive format it on the G4 & try reading it on the iMac. See if FontBook on the iMac can read the desired fonts (in the /Applications/Utilities folder).

Your dad may be able to show you which fonts are just display fonts (bitmaps that print terribly), ideally you need to grab the high resolution ones for printing. Frankly it has been years since I touched OS 9 fonts but I recollect some would work on OS X. There were converters for some formats but I'm afraid it has been too long to recall the names

Hopefully you will get attention from folks who are still using classic or OS 9.

(thanks for being so helpful thus far! Really appreciate it).

From what I can read (its all in Korean):

    Mac OS 9.2.2

    512 mb

    G4 990mb (I assume ram?)

939.7mb (I assume hard disk space?)

    Mac OS ROM KH-10.2.1

    Does this help at all?

    Thanks for the tip,

We tried to move some over but the file format was funky.

Im going to try to drag some more from his font folder and see if they will install.

Drag the fonts onto the Font Book app icon (or use File > Add Fonts).

If they are valid on OS X Font Book will preview them & offer to install, the User folder is probably fine for just one user to use them.

That copies them into ~/Library/Fonts (~/ is the current users home folder).

You can add them to other Libraries for all users to access them, however you want to avoid replacing the OS ones, as it can effect booting & you may have some that existed on both OS's.

Oops!! (I really MUST start reading titles instead of jumping straight to the posts! - not the first time I've been bitten)

I'll just stay out of it since y'all are way ahead of me !
