Q: How do I convert mp4 to 264

An imovie video I saved to file I want to compress then upload to youtube.

 

I am totally confused. I tried to export it from quicktime player but it only wanted to save it as a .mov .

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

From the size of the file I guess that it may be a 1080p (HD) movie.  When you upload to share you may find 720p sufficient.  Saving to this resolution will result in a much smaller file.  You can also choose lower quality when saving to file. 

 

.mov or .mp4 doesn't make much difference to size.

    Any video shared from iMovie will already use the H264 video compression standard.  .mov and .mp4 are only containers for movies which can use various compression standards including h264. 

    It you need to you can convert .mov to .mp4 using Handbrake (https://handbrake.fr)

    Thanks Geoff,

     

    I will give handbrake a try. Part of my issue was the size of a 7 minute file from iMovie is 567mb. I heard that as a .mp4 it is a smaller file. I am about to make a bunch of 60-90 minute videos and am a bit horrified about the size, upload time etc..

     

    Also might be sharing videos with others as a file in the near future and read that  it is a more universal  format (container as you call it).

    It was a 720 since 1080 was not an option. I may have selected higher quality or compress setting though which may have been the issue.  Thanks for your help, I will try to export to desktop again and see if it is smaller.

    I dropped quality down to medium and it helped immensely. Thanks.
