Q: picture sizes on iPad Pro

I'm trying to create a jpeg to display on my wife's iPad Pro. The resolution is 2048 pixels by 1536 pixels. I made a jpeg version of one of my photos but it appears VERY small on the iPad screen. The actual image resides on a LaCie CloudBox and the iPad accesses the image via the MyNAS app. An HD video (1920x1080 pixels) looks just fine, but all the still images are tiny. The first image I tried was 1920x1080 at 72ppi. Then I wondered - is the iPad screen much higher than 72ppi - so I tried 2048x1536 at 300ppi. The image still appears tiny, and when enlarged on screen it pixelates. Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

I wonder if the app you are using to first receive or display your image is reducing it in some way.

Anyway a 9.7" iPad Pro Retina display is 2048-by-a536 at 264 pixels per inch according to the Apple specs.

    Hello Pamfrombalwyn

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm in discussion with LaCie at the moment (they make the MyNAS app) and all the jpeg images I add to the CloudBox drive show as tiny on the iPad; even the ones that came with the drive! I've just gone back to a master image (from RAW) and saved it in Tiff format - and it works - albeit a large sized image (9Mb). A jpeg from the same original looks tiny again! I've even tried saving the jpeg from two different image manipulation apps (Pixelmator and PS Elements) with the same result. I'm totally mistified.

It sounds like you're using very high compression (low quality) when converting to jpeg. Does your app allow you to adjust the quality?

    Hi Diana

I'm using best quality or just below. In fact the first trial was full quality. I've been talking to LaCie ( they created the MyNAS app ) and at the moment they are unable to help. They've asked for the CloudBox firmware version as a starting point; but the device was only delivered yesterday! Tiff files work OK, but are rather big (9Mb), .png fails just like .jpg resulting in tiny images on screen. I've check all these images on my Mac Pro and they all look good. They're 2048 x 1536 pixels at 264ppi. If I open them from the CloudBox via an ethernet connection to my Mac Pro they're fine. It's just viewing them on the iPad that gives me the problem.

OK. So the jpegs themselves are fine, as you can confirm on the Mac. It sounds like the MyNAS app is showing you reduced thumbnails of the images. Just for argument, what happens if you send one of the images to the Photos app. MyNAS should offer the sharing icon, box with up arrow, that will let you transfer the image. I expect that Photos will receive the full resolution image. If there's any doubt, the free Metapho app will let you check the actual resolution.

Regarding the CloudBox firmware, the fact that it's new doesn't mean it's up to date. Once a device is in its sealed package, it won't be updated, no matter how long it sits in shipping containers. You should check for updates.

    Hi Diana

Presuming I've done it correctly I get a low res image. I clicked on the icon at top right and 'shared' with Photos after creating a new album via iCloud. I've sent the details of the current firmware to LaCie, but they've yet to get back to me. If that's the answer I come back to the Apple Community here and let you know. In the meantime thanks for your help.

    Hi Diana

I updated the firmware but this alone did not seem to cure the problem. I'm not sure what we did in the end (the iPad belongs to my wife) but via Photos and iCloud we can now view those same images at full resolution! I think we missunderstood the function of MyNAS. We also 'shared' the movies with iMovie and were able to edit and rename to give us just waht we wanted. It would seem we need to learn more about how the iPad works (ios) in comparison to how the Mac (OSX) works!
