Please provide a screen shot of the message you are receiving. If you don't know how to capture a screen shot the directions are:

Take a screenshot of part of your screen

    1. Press Command-Shift-4. ...
    2. Move the crosshair pointer to where you want to start the screenshot.
    3. Drag to select an area. ...
    4. When you've selected the area you want, release your mouse or trackpad button. ...
    5. Find the screenshot as a .png file on your desktop.

Can't get it to repeat the missing components notice.

Preview is also loading unwanted at start-up (for two days now) with a blank window open, so the 'missing components' notice was not a surprise since it's behaving oddly at start-up as well.

The only way to reinstall the Preview app is to reinstall OS X, or to restore from a backup.

    Respectively,

How to reinstall OS X - Apple Support

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

The reason it became corrupted needs to be addressed. The predominant cause of system corruption is the use of ill-conceived "cleaning" apps that should never be installed on any Mac.

I don't use any cleaning apps.  My iMac is 'vintage' 2009.  I've had to restore from Time Machine recently for something unknown in the start-up and I wonder if I'm just looking at an aging product . . .

    Thank you for your input.

That is good to hear, do you use any antivirus apps or any other type of third party "maintenance" apps?

Wish I could say exactly what I did, but it involved renaming and reformatting the actual (blank) window Preview was opening on start-up.  I'm sure it wasn't just renaming and closing it because I'd tried that several times.  And it wasn't unchecking 'reopen last window' in Preferences 'cause that was unchecked already. But something in the renaming as saving as some format other than.png changed the circumstance so that the problem is now solved.  Thanks for your time and attention JG and rk.  Posting in case anybody else runs into the same odd issue.

Sorry, I misspoke. I renamed it then hit 'Revert to.' I think.  I did this yesterday just messing around trying to solve the annoying little glitch of that blanl Preview window opening at every star-up.  Not sure what exactly I did but the 'problem' is solved and what I recall doing was renaming and hitting 'Revert to.'  I'm not at all knowledgeable about this and my point in reposting was not to appear to knowledgeable but rather to let another . . . well, I'm blah blah blahhing now.  Apologies re my earlier misspeaking.

And while I'm on that topic.  I also misspoke in my original post when I said I was getting a reinstall notice.  That was/ is actually Photoshop.  So my whole Preview issue was just it opening in a blank window at start-up.

    Again, thanks and apologies.

In spite of possible age issues, I am glad that you persevered and fixed the issue.
