Q: Mail -lost "on my Mac" feature after clean restall

After I had to reinstall my system my new Mail app no longer has the "on my mac" section.  I had stored different emails on it, banking notifications mostly.  Is there any way to retrieve them?  They were not stored in iCloud.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

    Hello prairiepeg,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that after upgrading, you are not seeing the "On My Mac" folder in your email. Let's have you go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts. From there uncheck the "Enable this account" option and then recheck it. Then test for the issue.

    Best regards.

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion.  It sounded promising but it did not help.   I neglected to mention that the connection  bar at the bottom  is not showing either.  I mention this because when I rechecked the box and glanced at the window, it briefly flashed the word "connecting" at the extreme bottom, it  then vanished.

Basically, about one third to one half the space is taken up with mailboxes and iCloud and then just blank space below.

    Hi prairiepeg,

At this point, you may be better served by using another one of Apple's support resources - https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action.

    Cheers

    Hi,

You may be right, but I spent so much time with them earlier in the week, getting my computer going again, that I am a bit reluctant to call again.  I was on the phone with three different support people and they really worked hard and were very nice to work with. Of course, we finally had to go to a clean install at the end.  Which is why I am dealing with getting what I need back.  I don't know if it is feasible but I was wondering if I could go to my backups and get my old mail moved back.  Do you think there would a conflict with the one on here now?

    Thanks for responding.

    Prairiepeg,

You could reinstall from a backup, but it would be restored to when that backup was made. Meaning you might not have some of the more current messages. There shouldn't be a conflict, because you will be replacing the one on there now with the backup.

    Cheers

I guess I can't do this; when I tried to move it to Applications, I got the message "Mail can't be modified or deleted because it is required by OS X."  And it did seem like a good solution because I have up-to-date messages on another computer.

Ah, well. thanks for the input.
