Q: How to validate a .app file?

I closed the App Store in the middle of an OS update. It was spinning for a long time so I decided to just close and try again. But when App Store again, the button for the update turned into "RESTART". I found the file OSXUpd10.11.6.pkg so it looks like it downloaded. BUT, is it complete? Can I validate the file before I attempt the update? Or am I worried about nothing? Will the update process validate before it tries to update?

    Do not interrupt OS X App Store downloads. Just click the RESTART button, and let it finish this time. If it needs to validate, it will do that on its own, and there is nothing that you can do to validate it independently anyway.

    There isn't much feedback, just a spinner. I was also downloading another application update that errored out, so that is why I thought it might be stuck. I waited an hour before canceling (by closing App Store). I guess it competed and didn't stop spinning.

     

    So, you say I can click RESTART and if there are issues with the file, it will figure it out for me? I just don't want to install a half baked update :-)

    If you quit the app store in the middle of a download, I'm not sure that the download is actually finished. The process works if you hit the Pause button.

     

    Have you done what the app store button suggested > restart? I'd do that first; a restart usually does no harm (and you do have a backup of everything before you started this process - right?).

     

    Have you checked System Report > Installations to see if it was actually installed?

    There was no Pause button.  I have not yet pressed Restart (that is the point of this post, I'm concerned to do that). Yes, I have TM backups. I am also doing a Carbon Copy Clone of my HD just to be even safer (been meaning to do this for a while, so thought this would be a good time).   No, I am not familiar with System Report -> Installations. I will try that.

     

    I would think that when a file (update) is being downloaded, it doesn't get renamed to the actual .app file name until the download is complete. Stopping it, would leave the temporary name... That's how I've done it in my programing life. But not sure how Apple does it.  My thinking is, it actually completed the download, but was stuck in the "spinner" state. I'll try the System Report you suggested.

     

    I must sound paranoid...  ;-)

    The System report is easily accessible by clicking on the Apple logo in the menu bar > System Report. Scroll down to Installations.

    There is no "System report" menu item in the apple logo menu. Do you mean System Preferences?

    Sorry, I don't see meaningful info there.  What am I looking for? I clicked Software and I see the current version, which I already know. I thought I could find what updates are pending.  Confused....

    So I found the following link that allows you to download the update. Download OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Update

    I downloaded it and it is much bigger than the file I ended up with above. File Size: 759.1 MB

    I copied it over the old file in the location above. Hopefully that will do the trick... I will try to update later when I have some time. Hopefully just copying in a new file won't screw things up. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know.

    Can you post the exact file path of your screenshot please.

     

    If you downloaded a complete update installer, you should be prompted to install it when the download finishes - unless you initiate the install, nothing is going to happen.

     

    As for the system report, I don't know what you are looking at, but following my file path, you wind up looking at of your installations (of software):

    To see the System Information option, hold down the option/alt key when going to the  menu.

     

    The installer is 6.22 GB.

    I see now... Looking at mine, it appears that I only have 10.11.5 as the latest. After doing the restart, it indicated it was doing the update, but it did not actually update to 11.10.6.

    About the mac still shows 11.10.5

    When I rebooted a second time, it said I had updates that weren't installed and it opened the App Store. But under updates, there were none.

    Seems like things are now out of sync. Should I just download the update manually (outside of App Store) and install it?

    At this point, I'd suggest you download the combo update (combos sometimes are able to fix little glitches) - bigger file, but it won't hurt anything. FWIW, I only update with combo updates - have done that for years.
