For the sake of brevity, I didn't mention that my comment about post iOS 6 installation referred to an iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. I should have been clearer. My comment about the wife's iPhone 5 still stands.

Thanks for the info.  I'm surprised that everyone I know who has an iPhone 5 doesn't have the power off slide anymore but your wife's does. That means there's something wrong with ours. I tried it right out of the box without having anything on the iPhone 5 and mine and my wife's just shut off completely without the power to slide off screen appearing. I asked my other friends and they said the same thing, tht it never appeared. Not sure if this is an issue worth bringing to apple.

I have been trying to figure this out on my wife's 4s. I had been holding both buttons down and it just powers down with no slide bar....and as posted by others (sorry I am lazy when it comes to looking up who posted earlier) you know who you are. Just hold the dang button on the top and eureka slide button revealed itself. No need to hold both anymore. At least that is what worked for me.

Good luck all and remember not to get too ****** when stuff doesn't work because the phone doesn't care if it works or not nor does it care if you get all worked up...**** it doesn't even care if you smash it or throw it in the ocean or swear at it.

Just hold the on and off button down to get the power off slider to appear. Hold both power and home for a hard reset. When your power off screen comes up you can also hold down the home button only and it will clear your cache without turning off your device.
