Q: OS 10.8.5 MacBookPro 2.  OK to upgrade directly to El Capitan?

Long Question but providing all the details.

OS 10.8.5 MacBookPro 2.7Ghz Intel Corei7, 4GB 1067MHz(17-inch, Mid 2010).

OK to upgrade directly to El Capitan?

Finally making the move. My hold up was Quicken and Quickbooks being not compatiable with the latest OS's.

Yes. There aren’t any risks specifically associated with skipping the intermediate versions.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

Thank you to both replies.  I use the same app compatibilty site ,RoaringApps.  My business software are old so I have to make the move and I back up to 3 HHD's, weekly.  software is on order.

By the way, while I am upgrading, I have another question about my Hot MBP (MacBook Pro OS10.8.5 (Mid 2010) running HOT) and I am assuming it's about not upgrading, but my question is: should I do a clean install while I am involved.  Makes sense to me but do you Mac guys have any tips?  Thanks again

Make sure you have a good backup (better yet, two backups)  because your "hot laptop" symptoms may be a bad sign.  The OS 10.8.5 in and of itself is not a cause for a "hot laptop" -- millions of Macs ran fine under 10.8.5. You could have some problematic software or a hardware problem. Have you run the Apple Hardware Test and installed a temperature monitor that shows fan activity and temperature (there are several utilities that can do this)? Also, some utilities (TechTool Pro 9 is one example) can test fan operation.

Given what you describe, if I were in your shoes I would first check the hardware, if it passes muster, then I would erase the disk and install a fresh OS and then reinstall all software from scratch. You can copy your data files, photos, music etc. over from the backup.

There is no issue upgrading from 10.8.5 to the latest version of 10.11. I recently upgraded a machine from 10.6.8 to 10.11.6, went very smoothly. Had to install new printer drivers, but otherwise, no issues.

Thank you Steven626 for your great reply.  I will run the AHT and even do a clean install when my intuit financial software arrives for el cap OS.  Clean install of everything.

Restart the computer holding down the command - option/alt - P - R keys before the gray screen appears. Continue to hold until you hear the startup chime for the second time.

    Reset NVRAM/PRAM

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.
