Q: Mac won't restart after latest security update
Hello, I upgraded my imac (late 2009) to El Captitan a few days ago and everything went well and I had no problems using it after the upgrade.
Yesterday I tried to update the latest security fix (2016-001 10.11.6) and now it won't re-start. I get a bright grey screen with a circle with a line through it.
Can anyone help please?

Community Specialists
Hello SallyP,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding your seeing a circle with a slash symbol when trying to start your iMac. I use my iMac everyday and I'd be very concerned if it didn't successfully start up. I am happy to help.
This particular screen means your Mac couldn't find a valid System Folder to start up from. I recommend trying to reinstall OS X by using OS X Recovery. Please follow the steps below.
To start up from OS X Recovery, hold down Command (⌘)-R immediately after turning on or restarting your Mac. Release when you see the Apple logo. If you can't start up from OS X Recovery, try holding down Option-Command-R to start up from OS X Internet Recovery*.
Startup is complete when you see the OS X Utilities window
Once your Mac is in OS X Recovery, choose Reinstall OS X from the OS X Utilities window, then follow the onscreen instructions.
Also here is some very helpful information about the different screens that display when starting up.

Have a great day!
