Make sure that both devices are on the same wireless network. If you still cannot see your iPhone then on the iPhone swipe from the bottom and adjust airdrop setting to 'everyone'. If you see the iPhone then you just need to add yourself as a contact, switch to contacts only on the iPhone airdrop and you are all set.

I believe Tiger pre-dates even the oldest MacBook Air, so who knows what version of OS X you are using. An old version would certainly limit your ability to use AirDrop to communicate to an iOS device.
