Q: Why can't I use my iCloud email address as my Apple ID

When I want to enter my iCloud email address (like foo@icloud.com) as my Apple ID, the system at appleid.apple.com tells me that I can't use an email address with a domain owned by Apple as my Apple ID which I find odd enough. I tried to create a new Apple ID through appleid.apple.com just to see what happens and even then it says that you cannot use an email address with an Apple domain.

It becomes even more odd when you consider that, if I'm not wrong, you can very well create a new Apple ID and use a new @icloud.com email address if you do it with an iPhone.

I can use my iCloud address as the primary email address of my Apple ID account so it's not a huge problem, but it still annoys me a little bit that the name of my Apple ID has to continue being my obsolete Gmail address.

Does anyone have more information on this?

I thought I was the only one that got bugged by this! I too want to just use my iCloud email as my login. I don't want to have to use my gmail. Even though I still have full access to this gmail email, I just wanna use my iCloud.

You can use your iCloud email as your login. Anywhere you are asked to log in your Apple ID, you can log in the iCloud ID that is attached to that Apple account. They are completely interchangeable. If you sign into iTunes with your iCloud.com email address, then when you select "View My Account" you will see your gmail Apple ID. Just start using your iCloud.com ID instead.

I Want to completely delete my gmail email off the account and I cannot. That makes no sense.

You can change your Gmail address, but you would have to provide another non-Apple address to change it to.

You can delete the Gmail account. You just have to replace it with another valid email address that is not an Apple domain email.

It's 2016 and it is still an issue. I've got several tech support calls and emails because of this issue and it is causing me lots of bugs (The system is getting confused by different emails being used differently in old accounts and my current account. One example where this becomes a privacy concern is that it shows me other people's devices and cases and likewise misses my devices depending where I log in).

It's definitely hard to comprehend from a users perspective and since it's been 4+ years when this issue was reported it is also hard to understand from a technology perspective.

"And it is still an issue"  implies there's something not working as intended.  It would be like saying clicking the apple on a Mac causing a menu to appear is an issue.  It's not.  That is how it works.  It's not likely to ever change.

If you have multiple Apple IDs, you've also created your own mess, not Apple.  I doubt you're actually experiencing any bugs, but if you want to explore that, you should create a different thread for it.

There is no issue. If you set up an iCloud account on an existing Apple ID account, then the iCloud ID will be the same as the Apple ID except for the .com, .icloud, etc.

You cannot change any Apple-domain ID. So, if your Apple ID is @me, @mac, or @icloud.com, you cannot change that ID. If you have an iCloud.com email attached to your primary ID (regardless of what Primary ID it is - Apple-domain, gMail, etc.), you cannot change that ID to a Primary ID.

If you want an iCloud.com ID to be your Primary ID, you have to set up a brand new Apple ID on a iCloud screen that is not signed in to any account. You will see an option to set up a free iCloud ID there.

That is the only way you can make an iCloud ID your Primary Apple ID.

This is how it works. It is not considered a problem, it has been designed this way from the get go....

This is ridiculous. its obviously a problem for the consumers or this thread would not be 4 YEARS OLD with regular updates!!!

Apple is making it really easy to jump ship by telling customers that their problems are not valid.

You aren't going to get anything here. This is a user to user technical support forum. If you want to share your feelings with Apple, you can do so here: Apple - Feedback

    Thanks for trying to help.

I'm fairly certain I set up my current account with an @icloud.com email but can't remember with absolute certainty how I filled out that form since it has been several years. The Apple systems are not sure either. My iCloud system settings state that my @icloud.com email is my "Apple ID" but in the Apple Support Profile it lists my other email as my "Apple ID". So, something is not quite right there.

Also, this is not necessarily true that the user "created [their] own mess". I had to create a different Apple ID when I moved between different countries. There was not much of a choice for me to make as a user since it was a requirement from Apple.

Anyhow, I'll ask Apple to delete my old accounts, which they can do, and will continue not using their web services.

I tried to change my log in as well but can't change to my .icloud one either,  I actually don't care if I keep my log in but the email address that is used for that had been closed by my provider so I started using my iCloud one for emails.  Problem is I am no longer getting emails from Apple because they are still sending it to my old address.  I just want to make my iCloud email the primary one they send emails to.  Is that possible?

No, you cannot make changes to any Apple Domain email assignment - @iCloud.com, @me.com, @mac.com. Whether that email address is your iCloud address attached to your Apple ID, or whether it is your actual Apple ID, it cannot be changed from that function.

You will need to get a new email address (you can get a free one from Google, Yahoo, etc.), and then go to your Apple account, and EDIT your current Apple ID to the new email address. BEFORE you do that, however, be sure to sign out of iCloud on your computer or any devices where it is signed in. Also sign out of iTunes & App Store, FaceTime, and Messages. Then EDIT your email on your Apple account, then sign in with the new email address. You can then go on using your iCloud address if you wish.

To EDIT your Apple account ID, go to: Apple - My Apple ID

    Best of luck,
