Q: mac photos sort pictures by date taken

how do you sort the pictures in mac photos under the "all photos" list by the date the pictures were taken?

if i go to the view menu, the only semi-applicable choice says "Keep Sorted By Date Added."  There's a check mark next to that option.  The entire line, however, is greyed out so that it can't be selected and there are no other sorting options.

thanks!

I thought of something which is maybe what you have been saying all along.  Go to "Moments" first where the photos are already sorted by date and then build your albums.  This rather than building your albums from "All Photos" or "Photostream" where the photos are sorted by date added. Is that the idea?

It does not matter where you select the photos for the album - where ever is easiest for you - once they an in an album you have three sort options available currently - by Photo data oldest first, newest first and by title

and no I do not like your method as I posted it is

awkward and difficult and causes data loss

On the contrary I think it does matter where you select the photos when you create an album.  I found "All Photos" to be sorted by date added and "Moments" sorted by the date of the photo. There is no option to change this. Thus if you create an album by selecting photos from "All Photos" they will be sorted by date added, however, you select photos from "Moments" they will show up in your album in the order of date taken.

No there is no option to change the way All Photos & Moments are sorted. Build your albums however it's easiest for you.

Once done creating the album, you can select the album and resort by the 3 options as described by Larry which is by title or photo date by oldest or newest order. You can also sort manually by dragging photos to the order you want within the album.

That is not correct - the sort options of the album have nothing to do with the sort of the source - that is why putting them in a user album is the correct answer to the question - do it and you will see - no matter the source they will show in teh user album according to the sort option chosen for that user album
