Q: Is this email fake?

image.png

i got this after I pre ordered the iPhone 7. Thing is: I placed 2 separate orders. Shouldn't I have gotten 2 of these? The link take you to this address: https://buyiphone2.apple.com/WebObjects/IPACustomer.woa/wa/IPAPreAuthAction/edit Order

i looks legit, but it's very sketch. Never mentions my name. Order number. It wants me to log in with either my Apple ID & password.... Or the reservation number in the email and my phone number.

I Tried the reservation and a fake phone number and it says it cant find my reservatio. It then props me to login with Apple ID and password again.

I Tried to go thro the I forgot my password link and it brings you here:

https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid?&language=US-EN&app_id=2083&pr s_account_nm=sab333%40cornell.edu&newWin…

ANother funny thing is that the Apple ID email box was already filled out... And I don't recognize it:

****

i don't know if I'm just being paranoid or being smart. Please help me out.

If email is unknown to you, the only conclusion one can make is that Apple "got its wires crossed" somehow.

It is not unheard of... but rare.

When *I* choose the first link, I am presented with a login page...

Did you enter YOUR OWN Apple ID credentials? (email addy + password)

When I try it, I get an error

We’re sorry. We can’t find your reservation. Please verify your information and try again.

iForgot link on that page takes me to the page I would expect to see = BLANK

Have you tried to REPEAT the results you got before? (who knows, the "wires" may be UNcrossed now!)

YYes I just tried it again from my iPhone. My iPhone has never been owned by anybody else, so I don't think there were any lingering accounts on my device. But from the email I click "complete order". It takes me to the log In screen and I click "I forgot username/password" and it still populates this same email address. Very odd. I will try to do it on my iPad when I get home.

    More testing for sure...

Make sure that you take the exact same action steps on different devices - i.e., start from the email message links

Report results one at a time on each device = same or different

No such thing as "too much information" in these deals

I Tried it with my ipad. But the email does not auto-fill. So it must be something in my iPhone?!?

Next test is from a computer to finish "discovery of data" in investigation

Be sure and open the email on each device's mail app -- and use the links from within the email (continuity in methodology is important)

This is all in preparation to contact live Apple Folks instead of we users here!

    Hello again elamparo,

I suggest you contact Apple support with this e-mail problem. It sure sounds like Apple's databases are messed up. How would you like it if other people were able to access your Apple ID like this?
