Q: Performa 6200CD

Seeking suggestions on how to move files from Performa 6200CD to Windows based system.  6200 does not have ethernet port, only phone connection.  I do not have a land line (VOIP only) so uploading to web does not appear to be an option.

System has read only CD so moving files via CD does not appear to be an option.

I can procure a USB connecting 3 1/4" floppy drive, and attempt to move files manually (i.e. copy to floppy in Performa and read onto PC via USB connected floppy); however, I am concerned with ability of PC to read Mac formatted floppy disk.  Also, any files greater than floppy's limited capacity would need to be excluded.

SUGGESTIONS?

The operating system on the Performa 6200CD should contain a PC Exchange control panel. If active, this would allow transfers on PC-formatted floppy disks.

Otherwise, it is possible to read 1.44 MB (not 800K) Mac-formatted floppies in a USB floppy drive connected to a Windows PC, but only if the PC has a Mac-disk utility (such as TransMac or MacDrive; do check whether the version in question supports the handling of floppy disks).

Files over 1.4 MB could in principle be transferred in segments, but the splitting application needs to produce parts that can be joined on the other platform. That could be a major problem. Which exact operating system versions are in use on the Mac and the PC?

Yet another possibility (without the file-size limitation) would be to carry out a null-modem transfer between a (MiniDIN-8F) serial port of the Macintosh computer and a DB-9M serial port of a PC (or a USB-to-serial adapter connected to the latter). For this you would have to combine a normal Mac MiniDIN-8M to DB-25M modem cable with a standard PC-style (multi-head) DB-25F to DB-9F null-modem cable. You will also need terminal emulation software on both sides. This could be the communications section of Claris/AppleWorks on the Mac and a number of third-party communications programs on the PC (or built-in HyperTerminal for older Windows versions).

Hi you have also the SCSI Port (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_performa/specs/mac_performa_6200cd.htm l#macspecs2) to attach a ZIP Drive that can be formatted also for PC.

    I hope this helps

Everymac.com even has a specs profile page for that old Mac

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_performa/specs/mac_performa_6200cd.htm l

It says it uses an IDE hard drive.  Maybe you can physically remove hard drive from old Mac and use something like this

    https://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NVSPATA/

(or a USB external drive case for IDE drive) to connect it to your Windows PC.  The Mac's hard drive is formatted as HFS or HFS+, so you'll need to extend your Windows system to read that disk format.  Maybe something like

    http://www.mediafour.com/software/macdrive/

There are probably other options, maybe even free ones.  I have not used any such software myself.

With access to a Windows PC with an internal or external dial-up modem, yet another method could be tested (without using public telephone lines). The PC modem (any model and speed between approx. 9.6 and 56 kbps should be fine) would be directly connected to the RJ-11 port of the Performa 6200CD modem (through a normal RJ-11 to RJ-11 phone cable). Standard communications software can be used on both computers. Details about a similar setup can be found atRe: Apple Personal Modem Issue. Depending upon the modems involved, this may or may not work without a simple home-built line simulator.

If any kind of extra software should be needed on the Performa 6200CD, please note that a transfer on CD to that Mac is possible. The operating system on the Performa should contain the necessary helper files to handle ISO 9660. This means that one can download Mac software as MacBinary (.bin) or BinHex (.hqx) onto the Windows PC, and then burn an appropriate CD (CD-R) at a low speed there. Once on the Performa, decode the .bin or .hqx via StuffIt Expander.
