Q: transfer photos with files?

I have an iMac with about 160GB of photos which I want to transfer to my new macbook pro.  My issue is keeping all the photos in their specific filing system.  I have tried putting small batches of these photos onto my macbook but they all come in to Photos as singles (the files/subfiles are gone).  I am really hoping I don't have to recreate the entire filing system I have in place?  Any help would be appreciated.

Assuming you are using Photos where you posted it is simple - everything is in the Photos library and you simply move it intace as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new system and launch Photos there

My old system, I used Adobe CS4 with Bridge to edit and view the photos, so they have never been in the mac photo library.  In Finder there is a Photo main file with all photos there within subfiles.  I was hoping to not purchase a secondary software as I no longer need something like Adobe for editing - the basic functions of Photos in my macbook will do fine if I can get the photos to move there with the files.

Are you saying you want Photos for Mac to show the folder structure you are currently having in the Pictures folder on your old Mac?

You can recreate the folders in Photos for Mac as albums.

If you select one folder at a time to import to Photos and then open the Last Import album, you can use the command "File > New album" and create an album for all currently selected photos.

Do that for each of the folders in your Pictures folder.

Alternately have a look at Old Toad's User Tip:   Import Folders of Image Files into Library as Albums

It describes an Apple Script by user code!z that will automatically create an album for each imported folder of photos.

This sounds like a solution I can work with - as long as the "albums" can have albums inside them.  Example, my current filing system has the year as the main file then each "event" as a subfile inside (school photos, Christmas, vacation, football season, etc).  Does the Photos program work like this?

Yes and no - Albums can not have albums inside of them - folders can have either albums or other folders inside them - same result but different names and slightly different work flow

Does the Photos program work like this?

Yes. Only you have albums cannot have albums inside, but you can create folders with albums inside, and the folders can be nested.

This will work best, if you are viewing the folders ans albums in the sidebar of the Photos Library.

For example, my albums with travel photos look like this in Photos's sidebar . many nested folders with albums and smart albums inside:

That is exactly what I would like to do.  I have the side view on so I can see the albums and such but cannot find where I can create a file - it just has the create new album option?

You create new folders from the File menu:  File > New Folder

You can drag the folders around in the sidebar and drag them into other folders.

If your mac is set to a different language, the menu items will be named differently, but the position will be the same:
