Q: Where is Migration Assistant?

I have three MacBook Pros. My oldest, 5-6 years old, kept saying it was seriously infected with a virus. I erased it. Now I reboot and get OS X Utilities on the screent, with four options: Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall OS X, Get help online, and Disk Utility. I have Time Machine using my current brand-new Mac, but I can't restore directly the old Mac using the new Time Machine copies. It tells me to use Migration Assistant. Where is it? I have yet a third Mac, a couple of years newer than this reformatted one, that I can restore from. Is restoration from Time Machine possible? How do I find Migration Assistant with those four options on the screen? Thanks.

Now, I'm sitting here with OS X El Capitan, and an invitation to install it, on the screen. "To set up installation of OS X 10.11, click Continue. Do I even need to install it after erasing it? I must, because I can't even find a desktop.

Yes. I ran Malwarebytes several times. Each time it said it removed bad stuff. I'd run it again, and the bad stuff was still there...

If you were running an older version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac, it had a bug that could result in this kind of behavior. That bug was fixed some time ago. Since you say the machine is 5-6 years old, I'm wondering if you were running OS X 10.7.x, and had an old legacy version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac on it. (Recent versions only run on OS X 10.8 and up.)

As for the message you saw saying that you had a virus, that was likely a scam and there wasn't actually any malware involved. Unfortunately, that means that erasing the hard drive over that was likely a mistake.

+1 on MWB being a trustworthy app.

What is it with all the  [ ] ,  = , color changes, <  >, etc. etc that you use all the time? What part of Texas did you learn that at? It makes your posts unreadable even to a Rice grad like me. Jimmy, now that you said +1 on MWB you are not suspicious any longer... I can count on you.  Before, nah, was not too sure.

That's the problem. Rice. I graduated from SMU. Not that I'm proud of that. Too many snobs and Junior Leaguers. Anyway... Sorry, but I have no idea what that means--color changes. I used a few percentages signs, dollar marks and other things to imply profanity when referring to my old MacBook pro, but not color changes.

Here I sit with OS X Utilities on my screen, not knowing where to go. It gives me four options: Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall OS X, Get Help Online, and Disk Utility.

Tom, you are right about Rice being the problem, we are the school by the Zoo. Regarding the signs and color changes, I was replying to CCC. He is the one that uses them regularly, not you. He is a good guy but hard to follow, at least to an escapee from the Zoo.

Regarding your issue, this thread started in the Support Communities forum but has now been moved to the MBP forum where it more rightly belongs. You are in better hands there as I concentrate on iOS, not OS X.

I did not "learn" any of it - it  is my personal design style - pretty unique, huh?

    [something]

can indicate an "aside" like in stage direction

I also use it to signify a BUTTON's shape = [Reply] button - see how it looks like a button?

= is "equal to" or for hicks from South Texas "the same thing as"

    I do NOT use C O L O R changes - much

< is "less than" OR "before"

    > is "greater than" OR "then"

(common abbreviations in stating keyboard commands like Command + SHIFT > 3 is how you say "hold" CMD & SHIFT "then press" 3)

Although I never got a degree, I was just short... A&M, Richland Community College & NTSU (when it was UNT) - so education is really not an issue.

What I'd tell my best buddy is what I'll tell you = if it bothers you to look at it, don't look at it (equivalent to the Doctor telling the guy to stop hitting his head with the hammer to make his head stop hurting)

I CAN in fact dance, sing and play guitar, mandolin, trumpet & piano.

The field is dry enough to plow, NOW.

I am decidedly NOT all hat, though my days on the farm/ranch are long past. [spent summers with Maw Maw & Paw Paw on 700 acres west of Waco - cows, chickens, parakeets, cockatiels - both pony & horse since about 7 y/o]

Hat was handy in the sun as a Land Surveyor (a 'Profession' not a 'job') for 17 years, so plenty of sweat then too! (the test for registration in Texas is harder than the Bar Exam & Medical Boards - according to an RPS that was also a lawyer & a doctor)

Your only options, assuming you have erased your hard drive using Disk Utility, are to either restore from Time Machine, or to reinstall OS X and then, during the setup process, import your data from the backup. The former would probably be the preferable option... if that's not working, I'd be seriously concerned that your Time Machine backup isn't functioning properly.

You're probably best to contact Apple directly for assistance at this point, since you may end up having to troubleshoot a damaged set of backups.

the CONTEXT is - you must READ ON:

    Follow the yellow brick road...

[Continue] = you have NO operating system other than what is in the hardware to give you what you see

What puzzles me is that "Recovery" should be offering to install what came stock on the MBPro when you bought it!

A lop-eared pup wet behind the ears, am I.

Every Mac I ever bought was over $3000 - my last one is a PB Pismo!

It WAS the fastest portable available in the world... touting that it was the only one to do a "GigaFlop" calculation = a Billion floating point operations per second

(I am saving my pennies for a MBPro * $1100 is my budget)

[stuck now with a borrowed Dell since a fat person sat on my Pismo and broke the LCD!]

Ok...I thank all for the sage wisdom and wisecracks. Lots has happened in the past 48 hours. I rummaged around and found FOUR old hard drives with which I have used Time Machine in the past. I plugged them ALL into my ailing Mac, using a USB extension, and after ten minutes it found several copies that it said would work. I clicked on one, and it took five or six hours to download. Next morning I woke it up, and there was the initial sign-in window. I clicked on the Identity (or whatever you call it) that I used, added my password, and the home page never came up. Eventually it went back to Utilities and the four options, on how to rescue it. Currently I'm running Time Machine again, copying an old version and we'll see what happens. Says, "Restoring Files. Time Remaining: 3 hours 22 minutes." I wonder if the hard drive is about to die, because it's very sluggish.
