Q: suggestions for ARCHIVING old business mail

i have a large amount of old email that seems to reside in thunderbird profiles which i think i transferred when i moved to the mac many years ago. right now they exist as about four email profiles in thunderbird on my mac. i would like to make an attempt to get all this organized and am considering importing this email to Mac Mail.

however, i am also wondering if it might be a much better idea to MOVE this mail to some kind of "archivally accessed" software and to then also move some older mail out of MAIL into this parallel archive software

are there any power users that can suggest options?

also, does anyone have a suggestion on how to measure the size of the email file in Mail and whether there are any practical limits i should not go over?

THANKS

You can  create multiple On My Mac mailboxes to move the mail to and keep it organized. Mail/Mailbox/New Mailbox.

    hi eric,

thanks very much. i have a couple of posts on this issue so apologies in advance.

this is a good idea i think. i have to think about it. potentially i could ARCHIVE any mail - say prior to 2015 - in a mailbox on my mac pro? in which case i would not have access to it on my laptop is that right? or conversely i suppose i could archive it on the laptop?

also, things are a bit of a mess with my last effort ending in four profiles in thunderbird as i cleaned up old PC email. this is currently on my desktop machine and i can access it within thunderbird.

do you happen to know if there is a good way to get these /profiles/ into mac mail or if it might be better archiving this mail in something like mail steward? apparently this will give me more powerful search abilities of something?

at the same time it will also be "quarantined" on a particular machine...

i was never really able to get this software to work so i am not really eager to go trying to use it again. but maybe third time will be the charm in this.

You are welcome. If you put the e-mails in an On My Mac mailbox and delete them from the other computer, you would only have access to them on one computer, unless you did screen sharing or something similar.

I cann't help with Thunderbird because I've never used the application.

Mail Steward should work. Profiles = accounts? You can add the accounts to Mail.
