Click here; the only safe source is through the online Apple Store/Mac App Store. If you already bought it, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to do so and click on the Purchases tab.

Thanks for your inputs! Since there are already two newer versions of macOS (Mavericks & Sierra) is there a free Mountain Lion download from Apple or another safe source?

No. You need to pay for it. Obtaining it from a source other than Apple would not only be unsafe, but also an illegal distribution.
