Sep 12, 2016 2:30 PM in response to crisdalsaceby Lindsay_B.,Hi, crisdalsace!
Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. After reading your post, I am understanding that you cannot locate GarageBand after a recent upgrade to OS X El Capitan. I use a variety of apps on my own Mac, so I know it's important that you can access all of yours. I would be happy to help!
First, I would suggest checking your Applications folder to see if the app is there. The Applications folder is where GarageBand (and other OS X apps) are typically installed. You can locate the Applications folder through Finder, which appears as the following icon in your Dock.
If you do not see the Applications folder in Finder, or do not see GarageBand in the Applications folder, you can use Spotlight to search the entire computer and find out if the GarageBand app is in another, unexpected, location. The article linked below will guide you through using Spotlight.
Mac Basics: Spotlight helps you find what you‘re looking for
If you are still unable to locate GarageBand after doing a Spotlight search, it's possible you need to redownload the app from the Mac App Store.
Download your past purchases
You'll find the specific instructions you're looking for under "From the Mac App Store" in the "Redownload an app" section, which is as follows:
From the Mac App Store
Cheers!

Sep 12, 2016 3:30 PM in response to crisdalsaceby léonie,Which version of GarageBand did you use?
And how did you lose it during the upgrade to El Capitan? The upgrade should have let GarageBand installed.
If your GarageBand version is not compatible with El Capitan, it will have been moved to folder with incompatible software at the toplevel of your startup drive, see tis document: About incompatible software on your Mac - Apple Support
GarageBand 6.0.5 and GarageBand 10.1.2 will run on El Capitan. which version did you have?
