Q: I may have been hacked/compromised

I was signing into an app and a second after I logged in the screen went black > the apple logo (for about 2 seconds as if restarting) > Home screen. A reboot would be much longer and also I was able to use touch ID.

This has me worried I want to know if I was compromised for sure. NO I do not jailbreak my phone NO I am not on suspicious websites on Safari.

I opened up a JPEG file from Safari from a gmail account. I'm afraid maybe a trojan or malware was attached when I opened it and it spread to my phone with a key logger, possibly. No the JPEG was not a nude it was a fake cashier's check from a scam that I was fully aware of. I was just trying to see how far they would go so I was providing fake info and being "cooperative". I'm not a guru when it comes to this stuff I would really like some help and closure on this. Sure, I'll get a new iPhone 7 but I don't want it to spread to my network or my contacts' phones or my iCloud. My phone has a lot of sensitive information as well so I'm pulling my hair out trying to find out what happened to my phone. The behavior mentioned above has NEVER happened to me before. I have gotten the black screen of death a couple times but of course with new firmware it has since been resolved.

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.4, I have since updated to iOS 9.3.5

You have not been hacked. iOS cannot catch viruses unless you jailbreak your phone. If you have any doubts about Safari just reset it as follows:   Close Safari completely from the app switcher window by double clicking the Home button and swiping up the Safari preview pane until it disappears from the screen. Then go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. Then hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons at the same time for about 15 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

Thank you so much for the quick response. How do you explain the disruption that occurred when accessing the app?

It has never done that before. Screen goes to black > Apple logo as if booting up > Home screen.

but the phone was not reset as touch ID was functional.

I've had that happen before. I was able to reproduce it multiple times to try to gather some information about what was going on. It seems to be something that is more serious than a typical app crash but not as serious as iOS restarting. This behavior effectively kills a running app without allowing it to send out or store information, so there is no way you could have been compromised. If this happens repeatedly when signing into that app, this article may be useful: If an app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open - Apple Support.
