Q: App Store stuck in update loop

I'm using El Capitan 10.11.6 on a mid-2015 MacBook Pro.

The AppStore automatically updated the OS and a few apps today (2016-09-13). But the badge on the the AppStore dock icon remains stuck at "1," indicating one pending update. That uninstalled update is for iTunes 12.5.1.

Clicking the "Update" button next to that entry causes the app to slowly download. Once the download is complete, the indicator reads "Installing..." -- but only for a few seconds. The installation never takes place. The AppStore badge never clears. The App Store still shows the iTunes 12.5.1 update is available. Yet there's apparently no way to install it. I can click the Update buttons again, but then it just does the same thing: downloads, attempts install, and fails with no error message.

What now? I've checked the obvious culprits (e.g. making sure the iTunes app isn't open, rebooting, etc.) but no luck.

FWIW, I also have a Parallels version of El Capitan which runs on this same machine. It's experiencing the exact same problem.

Thanks.
