Q: Transferring Content via FireWire

Shortly I will be receiving a Macbook Pro. I will be transferring my iMac content via FireWire using Migration Assistant. Went online to obtain a cable and thats when I ran into a problem. They had all sort of configuration such as 4 pin to 6 pin. Can some one tell me what configuration FireWire cable to transfer my content from my iMac to my Macbook Pro?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

It depends on the ports; a FireWire 400 port on a Mac is 6-pin, while a FireWire 800 port is 9-pin. If a Mac has a Thunderbolt port instead of a FireWire one, use a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.

    ddean5,

If you are going to use MA to migrate your data it's much easier and elegant to connect the old computer's Time Machine backup EHD via USB to the new computer. This method is extremely simple and you can do it during Setup Assistant rather than Migrations Assist. SA launches whenever you turn on any new Mac for the first time, it will get to a point where it asks if you are migrating from another Mac. Select yes, connect the TM backup and then follow the on-screen directions. The advantage of using SA is that it will not create a new user account like MA will and it is quicker because you will be in SA anyhow.
