Does OS X perform disk maintenance operations like modern Unix use file systems (Solaris, BSD, etc) in the background? If so, is a summary (or link to) of such optimization operations available for OS X? I have not come across such information so far.

About disk optimization with Mac OS X - Apple Support
Drive "Genius" has been implicated on this site in corrupting perfectly good hard disk drives. Never use such things on a Mac.
